AED

(Automated External Defibrillator)

Manitobans do not have to die of cardiac arrest.  Immediate access to defibrillation could mean the difference between life and death. Resuscitation Succes vs Time Graph - 1Life Workplace Safety and Health - providing workplace health, safety and first aid training in Winnipeg Manitoba

  • Resuscitation rates from Sudden Cardiac Arrest are less than 5% with CPR alone but increase to as high as 90% when CPR and Defibrillation are administered in the first minute
  • The survival rates decrease 10% for every minute a person is not defibrillated.

Our AED Program has been approved by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba.

What is an AED?

AED - Automated External Defibrillator Training - 1Life Workplace Safety and Health - providing workplace health, safety and first aid training in Winnipeg Manitoba

An automated external defibrillator (AED) is used to identify cardiac rhythms, and to deliver a shock to correct certain potentially fatal arrhythmias during a cardiac arrest. AEDs are safe, easy to use, and can be used effectively by non medical individuals. Trained responders have effectively used AEDs in many public settings, including casinos, airport terminals, and airplanes. Trained laypersons can use AEDs safely and effectively. An AED is an efficient and effective means of dramatically increasing survival following sudden cardiac arrest.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons has determined that organizations wishing to establish Defibrillator Programs in the community may do so without the requirement of a medical director. For the program to operate safety they must be established with:

  1. Written policies and procedures
  2. The appropriate training and regular training updates
  3. A program coordinator
  4. Liaison with local emergency services
  5. An inspection and maintenance program
  6. Event review and quality assurance
